Sprinter compared to a Rivian Van

We had an opportunity to check out the new(ish) Rivian van that Amazon uses for their EV delivery vehicles. We’ve seen these around Utah and California but it seems these have rolled out across the entire United States by 2023 already. Officially it’s called The Rivian Electric Delivery Van (EDV).

The one we saw here is an EDV500 and has a similar wheelbase to our 2020 2500 144”.

Internal testing indicates that the EDV 700 version will have a range of 201 miles (323 km).

EDV 900
up to 120 miles (193 km) of range
840 cubic feet of storage
length of 321 in.
wheelbase of 205 in.
GVWR of 14,000 lbs.

EDV 500
up to 150 miles (241 km) of range
500 cubic feet of storage
length of 248 in.
wheelbase of 157 in.
GVWR of 9,350 lbs.

EDV 700
up to 150 miles (241 km) of range
201 miles (323 km) according to Rivian's internal testing
660 cubic feet of storage
length of 277 in.
wheelbase of 187 in.

What’s interesting is that the EDV has two motors in the front and not just one calling it a dual-motor front-wheel drive configuration. This looks to come from the Rivian R1S SUV and R1T Truck

It makes sense to keep the parts consistent. But it can be cheap to have two motors in a van. Possibly as a back up if one fails so the van could get back to base? Or perhaps to deal with large loads up hills? It make us wonder if the range would be improved with a single motor.

Looking at the two vans you can see the sheer height of the van. The Rivian is 114.7” or 9 feet 8 inches. Which is taller than a 4x4 Sprinter van (with stock tires, stock suspension and no roof AC) at 111.3” 9 feet 2 inches.

What striking is the sheer size of that windshield. It’s designed for high front visibility for safety.

The passenger side of the Rivian EDV has a slider door. You can see it’s specifically designed as a delivery van (for LHD markets). Makes us wonder if it could be fitted with a normal door for personal or professional (non-delivery) use.

Oddly enough, we like the headlights on the van compared to those found on the Rivian R1S SUV and R1T Truck, which just look a bit immature and comical. These round headlights have much more of a Jeep feel to them.
