Travel: Tahoe to Feather River

Day 1 Sacramento to Tahoe City

The climb up

Sacramento is a crossroads in California. Located at the intersection of I-5 (eye five) the major North-South Interstate running from Canada to Mexico through three states and I-80 (eye eighty) the major East-West Interstate that runs from Chicago and terminates in San Francisco just 2 hours west of here. Sacramento is a bit of an surprising Capital of California. Over the last 10 years the area around the capital building has had some great restaurants, coffee shops and mercantiles pop up.

Check out or blog post on the Sacramento Delta for more travel options in this area.

From SAC (locally short for Sacramento) there are two main ways to get to the Lake Tahoe area. The historic Hwy 50 East or I-80 East. Hwy 50 takes you to South Lake Tahoe/Stateline and I-80 takes you through Donner Summit intro Truckee and onto to the northern part of Lake Tahoe.

Check out our other blog post on some trip details around Hwy 50 and South Lake Tahoe.

As we were going north from Tahoe on this trip we took The 80 east to Truckee. This really is the fast way to get to Tahoe. But be aware, when the weather is bad it can be slow going. We follow @CaltransDist3 on Twitter to get realtime updates on road conditions.
