What is ASTM D975 Specification for Diesel Fuel?

ASTM D975 covers multiple grades of diesel fuel, each with slightly different specifications for the fuel's chemical and physical composition. For example, diesel fuel #2 has a minimum flash point of 125.6°F, while diesel fuel #1 has a minimum flash point of 100°F (For winter temps)

Here are some of the grades of diesel fuel covered by ASTM D975:

  1. Grade Low Sulfur No. 2-D: A general-purpose fuel for automotive and non-automotive diesel engines

  2. No. 1-D S15: An ultra-low sulfur (ULSD) light middle distillate fuel for diesel engines that require higher volatility

  3. No. 1-D S500: A low sulfur light middle distillate fuel for diesel engines that require higher volatility

  4. No. 1-D S5000: A regular sulfur light middle distillate fuel for diesel engines that require higher volatility

  5. Grade 4-DA: A heavy distillate fuel for use in low- and medium-speed diesel engines

  6. ASTM D975 does not prevent the use of more restrictive federal, state, or local regulations.
