Making a roof rack out of 80/20
Inspired by all the creative stuff you can make with 80/20. We have thought, can you make a roof rack with it.
It’s modular and the channels allow for flexibility in layout.
RB makes plates that fit perfectly into the OEM Mercedes Sprinter roof rails. These were inspired by Vangoon. First you have to create the interface between the roof rails and then the 80/20 extruded bar. The beveled flat stock was cut to smaller pieces where it could slide into the roof rail channel. It was drilled and tapped to accept bolt to hold it down.
The black metal piece show above was the interface to slide into the 80/20 channel.
You have to cut a 3” long section to match the 90 degree supports. The 80/20 piece was cut down and used as a riser allowing for the triangular pieces to support either side of this new riser.
This is how it comes together. 3 90˚ angled pieces per side. Attached to the roof tracks with a 80/20 bar across to be used as the cross bar. It can obviously be cut down to be flush on each side if needed.
