Dreaded countdown to limp mode like caused by a bad NOX sensor

So you bought a used Sprinter (in the USA) and either having issues with your DEF, NOX or other parts of your emissions system like the particulate filter getting clogged up. Don’t fret. Back in 2021 Mercedes Benz reached a settlement in the United States Department of Justice (“DOJ”), the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”), the California Air Resources Board (“CARB”), and the California Attorney General’s Office (“CA AG”) regarding the emissions control system in Sprinter vans from 2009 to 2016 model years.

Leaking particulate filter from weld.

This was specifically for OM642 and OM651 BlueTEC II diesel vehicles sold or leased in the US only.  As part of this settlement, MBUSA is offering Owners and Lessees of these vans a “modification” to the vehicles’ emissions control systems. What that means I think depends on each van. But I’ve seen entire exhaust systems replaced, like on our 2013 V6 144 where we got a new cat, particulate filter and O2 and NOX sensors as well as an ECU update. We have heard of people getting new DEF injectors and pumps as well. So I’m not sure all ‘modifications’ are the same.

Anyhow, to find out if your van has had this done or is eligible, enter your VIN here to find out: Mercedes Benz Bluetech Update Site
